How to save money on your food bill

How to save money on your food bill each month

I have been asked by Sarah to post each week on how to stretch your buck further and be frugal. Although I am a couponer, I am here to talk about ways to help you save besides just couponing. A lot of you coupon, while some of you readers don't. I am here to give suggestions to help you save more. Some of the things I say each week, may or may not work for you individually. See what will work for you and try to apply it. This week I am giving suggestions on ways to save money on your food bill each month.

Obviously, my dear readers, there is couponing. I imagine that most of you who are reading this do indeed use coupons. Coupons do save you a lot of money each week, but there are other ways to help you save too. Some of you don't have time to coupon but still want to save money...while some of you coupon and still want to save more! Either way, these are great ways to help you save more!

The most important thing you can do is never go to the grocery store hungry. Make sure to eat before you head over to the grocery store. When you are hungry, EVERYTHING in the store looks good (especially those oreos and chips). Those treats and snacks are so expensive and will add so much to your grocery bill. When you go to the store when you are not hungry, you will have an easier time sticking to your grocery list.

This brings me to my next point. Make a grocery list. Hopefully you have been stocking up on items when they are on sale and you have a coupon. Even the die hard couponers STILL need to go to the grocery store for items they need that week such as bread, produce, cheese, eggs, etc. Make a list of what you want to make for each dinner that week. Plan your meals around what is on sale that week. If you see that chuck roast is on sale that week, then plan a meal with chuck roast in it. Never, and I mean NEVER pay full price for your meat (like I talked about two weeks ago). When you plan your grocery list, only list your essentials that you need. I am sorry, but fruit snacks and pringles are not essentials. Only buy what you need to make your meals. Do not deviate from your list. It has taken me a long time to do this, but I do not buy anything off my list anymore (unless it is something that is on sale and I have a coupon and I know I will need it eventually...but all of us couponers do that).

Next, stop buying pre packaged food. Try to make your dinners from scratch. I understand that most of you are extremely busy and do not have the time or means to make everything from scratch. However, if you can, try to. I make everything from scratch. I do not buy boxed potatoes, or frozen dinners. I am not saying at all that I am above you, it's just what I try to do for my family. I make everything from scratch not only to save money, but to eat healthier. When I make it from scratch, I know exactly what ingredients are in my meal. It is so easy to make a batch of waffles one day and throw them in the freezer. You can make so many homemade waffles for the same price as frozen waffles from the store. You will save so much money if you plan in advanced and make your food from scratch. Obviously, if you are getting the prepackaged meals and sides for free, they are so great. Just don't go out and pay full price for them. Prepackaged food does save a lot of time in cooking, but I will talk in a couple weeks on how to help with that. So stay tuned!

When you need to purchase an item and it is not on sale and you don't have a coupon then buy in bulk. I save so much money when I buy the larger size container. Even though it is more money upfront, you save so much money. It is so much cheaper for me to buy a 25 pound bag of flour rather than a 5 pound bag every month. See if you have any stores around you that sale items in bulk sections. We have a Winco here, and there you can buy almost everything in bulk. I can buy as little or much as I want on so many items. It costs me about $0.10-$0.20 to fill up my spice containers with their bulk spices. When you buy in bulk or buy economy size items, you save so much money.

It is amazing how these few simple steps cut my grocery bill down significantly. Everybody is looking to decrease their food bill, and if you follow those simple steps, you will be amazed at your savings. Soon I will start posts on how to help you cook from scratch for those who don't have much time to.

Next Wednesday I will be sharing something really neat that I have been making to organize up my pantry. The best thing is that it is free...so make sure to come check it out next Wednesday!

Questions I get??

Q.
Do you put the coupons in order of expiration?
A.
I don't put them in order, because each week when I put in new coupons I take out the expiring ones as I put new ones in.

Q.Does it take a lot of time?
A. If you are caught up and do them each week when you do them, then it dosent take long :)

Q. How do you cut all your coupons since you get 10 papers?
A. I pull the inserts apart, and stack the matching insert on top of each other so that way I am cutting 10 at a time!Like the picture below !

My cheat way!!
(Don't have time but still want to coupon???)

SO...Here is my pile- and this is why I haven't done this post earlier ;) I have been behind! We all get there, and get behind....but we still want to coupon and get the great deal!! Here is what I do!!!

1. On most blogs you will see when you find the deal you want it will say the item and then the date and either RP,SS,or PG!

2. So you take that date and then you go to your pile of inserts and on the right hand side it will have the date! Then you cut the coupon out that you need!

* So you like to do it this way??? Want to make it easier...Just take a sharpie and write the date on the front page ( of course not on the coupon )

NEXT :
So you are going through your ads and you find what you want...but not sure if you have a coupon and dont want to spend the time looking for it...what do you do???

Here is what I do!

I go to COUPONMOM.COM
...Then on the right hand side there is a label that says : Grocery Coupon Database
Click on that then put in your state and click go!Once the new screen pops up - put in the item you are looking for! ( Plus this way you can also see if a coupon someone else has- you can see if you have it too or it is just regional)

Questions :

Q. So what do I do before going to the store???
A. Before I go to the store I make sure to have my list planned out! I have my coupons clipped and if the store takes twice the value coupons I will have the coupons attached.

Q. What do you think is the benefit of having the binder?
A. I like to carry my binder with me when I am looking for deals- if I just am going to the store for a certain item I normally won't carry it with me.

* I have used different methods of organizing coupons and these are the two ways that have worked for me :) So you might find different ways that are better for you go HERE to see some different ideas!

Meat for cheap!

Are you often wanting a nice steak dinner but you don't want to pay a ton? Well, I have an easy trick. I am not going to lie, we eat very nice in our house. We eat a LOT of meat, including steaks, roasts, chicken...you name it! Most people think that my grocery bills are through the roof. They aren't. We get to eat really nice meat for close to nothing. Here is my tip:

Do not buy meat full price. The best time to buy the meat is when they are marked down to barely nothing. When does this happen? Let me tell you!

All fresh packaged meat has a "sale by" date on it. It will clearly state "sale or freeze by May 12" or whatever date. Well on May 12th, they HAVE to sale it or they have to throw it away. Rather than throwing it away, they will mark it down to hardly anything. The best time to find the meat that has been marked down, is right after the grocery store opens. I wait about an hour after open and then I go to the store and check the markdowns (that way I give the butcher plently of time to mark down all the meat). I live in Utah County and my favorite place to shop for meat is at our Super Target. Almost every morning I will find markdowns. Here is an example of something I see very often:
-1 pound of Flank Steak. It is normally $7.99/lb (I believe). That morning they will put it on sale for like $4.99/lb and stick a peelie coupon on it for an additional $3 off. That means I pay $2 and I get a pound of flank steak. Awesome right?

So the trick is to buy the meat on the mark downs and as soon as you get home, put them in your freezer. Then when you want to eat it, pull it out of the freezer that morning and let it defrost on your counter.

Right now in my freezer we have the following meat (all from markdowns): Sirlon Steak, Flank Steak, Eye of Round Steak, Chuck Roast, Chicken, T-bone Steak, Pork Loin, Ground beef...you get the point? You can have the nice meat, and not pay very much for it.

So call around to your grocery stores, and find out which stores do markdowns on "sale by dates"...most of them all will. And then go shopping about an hour after open and see what they have. You will be amazed at how much meat you will be able to stock up on.

Freezing Green Onions

Why should you freeze them?
I don't know about you guys, but in my house we go through a lot of green onions. I use them on a regular basis in cooking. We use them in cooking asian dishes, breakfast, casseroles, etc. Green onions are one of those that are hard to keep fresh. Sometimes I will buy them and they are good for a week, while other times I buy them they spoil the next day. I get sick and tired of throwing away my money. Also, sometimes a recipe will only call for one green onion...what do you do with the rest of the bundle? Throw it away? I know that I used to! Well now you never have to throw them away ever again.

How do you freeze them?
I have experimented with a few different ways and this is what I feel works best!

First off, remember that moisture is your enemy in freezing. Make sure that your green onions are fully dry. If they are not, dry them off with a paper towel to prevent freezer burn. Then chop all of your green onions.

With a funnel or your hand, pour the green onions into an old water bottle (clear works best). When you get them all inside the water bottle, screw the lid shut. Put the water bottle inside your freezer. With the clear watter bottle, you can clearly see what's inside. These will hold up for a few months. When ready to use them, just unscrew the water bottle and pour out as little or as much as you need.

It's that simple. How easy is that? Now you never have to worry about wasting those green onions!

NOTE: Green onions do become a bit soft in freezing, so they are best used in cooked dishes as opposed to salads and garnishing.
